Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te stated that Taiwan will not retaliate with trade tariffs against the United States but will work on eliminating trade barriers. He mentioned that Taiwanese companies will gradually increase their investments in the U.S. following President Donald Trump's announcement of import tariffs. Despite facing a 32% duty on its products, the U.S. tariffs do not apply to semiconductors, a key Taiwanese export. Lai assured that Taiwan, heavily reliant on trade, would face challenges with the tariffs but aims to minimize the impact. He emphasized that Taiwan does not plan to retaliate with tariffs against the U.S. and remains committed to investment in national interest. Notably, Taiwan's TSMC announced a significant investment in the U.S., paving the way for increased investment in various sectors to enhance Taiwan-U.S. industrial cooperation. Lai highlighted the importance of addressing non-tariff trade barriers to facilitate smoother trade negotiations with the U.S.
