Lee Sang Yong, the popular South Korean TV personality famously known for his role as the 'Popeye Uncle', has passed away at the age of 81 today (May 9). His agency, Emade, confirmed his death earlier this morning.
Reportedly, Lee Sang Yong had been feeling unwell with symptoms similar to a cold, and he sought medical attention at a hospital in Seoul's Seocho district. Unfortunately, he collapsed on his way back and was rushed to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, where he later succumbed.
The agency clarified that Lee Sang Yong had been in good health without any significant underlying conditions, even participating in an event just the day before. There were no indications of any chronic illnesses that could have led to his sudden demise.
The family is currently coordinating funeral arrangements, with details to follow at a later time.
Lee Sang Yong rose to fame as the host of 'Stage of Friendship,' earning the moniker 'Popeye Uncle' for his robust and cheerful personality. He also presented various other TV shows, such as 'Let’s Gather and Sing,' 'Popeye’s Tour of the Provinces,' and 'Let’s Go to the Market,' making substantial contributions to South Korean television.
His notable achievements were acknowledged through several awards, including the Order of Civil Merit and the Order of Sports Merit, among others. He was also known for his philanthropic endeavors, particularly in helping over 560 children with heart conditions by facilitating life-saving surgeries.
