Jeon Hong Joon, the CEO of ATTRAKT and the producer of FIFTY FIFTY, lost a defamation case against the producers of the 'Unanswered Questions' show, as reported by Herald Economy on May 25. The court ruled that the 2023 episode of the SBS investigative program that delved into the group's contract dispute with its agency did not contain any false or defamatory information.
The Seoul Southern District Court dismissed Jeon's lawsuit, where he was seeking around USD 220,000 in damages and ordered ATTRAKT to cover the legal expenses. The episode named 'Billboard and Girl Groups – Who Clipped Their Wings?' aired in August 2023, highlighting the strained relationship between FIFTY FIFTY and ATTRAKT, despite the group's global success with the hit 'Cupid' on the Billboard Hot 100.
Issues regarding financial transparency at ATTRAKT were brought up in the broadcast, including allegations of harsh treatment and emotional stress by former staff and members' parents. The court supported the program's content, noting missing music revenue in internal documents and statements from tax professionals and official data analyses.
Despite ATTRAKT denying the claims, the court found evidence supporting them, such as the disposal of food and lack of performance evaluations. The agency's argument of defamation due to lack of fairness or balance in the broadcast was rejected by the court.
In March 2024, the Korea Communications Standards Commission gave a warning to 'Unanswered Questions' following 1,100 viewer complaints. After the dispute, only Keena returned to ATTRAKT, with the other three original members signing with different agencies. FIFTY FIFTY has been revamped into a new five-member group under the agency's restructuring.
