Lee Ji Ah Seeks Guidance on Her Ancestor's Past Actions as National Institute for Korean History Responds

In a recent interview, the head of the National Institute for Korean History, identified as 'A,' shared insights into Lee Ji Ah's visit to the institute to delve into the history of her late grandfather's collaboration with Japan. During the visit a few years ago, Lee expressed a strong stance on breaking the cycle of attributing the actions of ancestors to their descendants.

According to 'A,' Lee Ji Ah, accompanied by agency representatives, visited the National Institute for Korean History in 2021 to gain a deeper understanding of her grandfather, Kim Soon Heung, and the extent of his actions. Speaking openly about her family's struggles, Lee sought advice on navigating the legacy of her ancestor without harboring any resentment towards him.

Recalling their conversation, 'A' emphasized his counsel to Lee Ji Ah to concentrate on studying history rather than defending or denying her grandfather's past actions. He commended her genuine approach in seeking guidance on managing the historical burden she inherited.

Further acknowledging the societal tendency to criticize descendants of controversial figures, especially on significant anniversaries like March 1st Movement Day or Liberation Day, 'A' stressed the unfairness of holding current generations accountable for the deeds of their forebears. He cautioned against the harmful practice of targeting celebrities based on their familial history.

In response to the scrutiny surrounding her family history, Lee Ji Ah broke her silence on her grandfather's affiliations with Japan. Recounting her discovery of his collaboration in a 2011 article, she highlighted her subsequent efforts to verify the information through research and consultations with the National Institute for Korean History. Despite grasping the historical context, she firmly asserted that such actions could never be excused.

Addressing the ongoing legal dispute over her family's property, Lee Ji Ah clarified her detachment from the land ownership conflicts and disavowed any connection to the issue. She advocated for the return of properties obtained during the Japanese occupation to the nation, underscoring her commitment to upholding justice.

Wrapping up her statement with a poignant apology, Lee Ji Ah expressed profound remorse for her grandfather's historical transgressions. Pledging to confront the truths of history with humility and a sense of accountability, she affirmed her commitment to honoring the past while forging her own path forward.
