George Santos, a former congressman, received a sentence of over seven years in federal prison for various fraud and identity theft charges related to his 2022 campaign. He admitted guilt in August last year to wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and stealing public funds, leading to 87 months of imprisonment. During his campaign, prosecutors stated that Santos used counterfeit campaign materials, stole donor identities, and obtained pandemic-related unemployment benefits. In addition to his imprisonment, he is ordered to pay $373,000 in restitution and a $205,000 forfeiture judgment, and will have two years of supervised release after serving his sentence. Santos, a Republican, faced a downfall after being expelled from Congress in December 2023 due to misconduct highlighted in a House Ethics Committee report. Considered a "pathological liar and fraudster" without genuine remorse by prosecutors, Santos initially gained attention through his involvement in a controversial situation linking Nicki Minaj, COVID-19 vaccines, and a tweet about swollen testicles. Santos attempted to introduce a bill inspired by Nicki Minaj's tweet to create a period for new vaccine development for enhanced public trust, but the bill did not pass. Santos is required to start serving his prison term by July 25, 2025.
