Former soccer player Kang Ji Yong has sadly passed away, leading to the removal of all his appearances on the show 'Divorce Camp'.
Kang Ji Yong's death was announced by soccer player Koo Bon Sang on social media on April 23. He was 36 years old.
Just before his passing, Kang Ji Yong and his wife were featured on the JTBC reality show 'Divorce Camp' where they were seen reconciling their financial conflicts with the help of the program. Kang Ji Yong also caught attention on the show for being revealed as Kwon Eun Bi's cousin.
During the airing of episodes 27 to 30 of 'Divorce Camp' from February 27 to March 20, Kang Ji Yong shared his post-soccer career job at a chemical plant where he earned approximately 3 million KRW (~2,103 USD) per month. He disclosed that the 500 million KRW (~350,503 USD) he had earned during his playing days was taken by his parents, leaving him in financial turmoil with debts amounting to 30 to 40 million KRW (~21,030 USD to 28,040 USD).
In light of Kang Ji Yong's passing, JTBC has decided to make their episodes on 'Divorce Camp' private and remove the video-on-demand replays out of respect for the deceased. They expressed their condolences for Kang Ji Yong's loss and confirmed that the April 24 episode of 'Divorce Camp' would still air as scheduled.
Kang Ji Yong, born in 1989, began his professional soccer career with the Pohang Steelers after being drafted in the 2009 K-League Draft. He later played for several other teams before retiring in 2022.
His funeral is set to be held at 6:30 AM on the 25th, with the wake scheduled at Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital Funeral Hall.
