During an interview with 'People magazine' on April 18, Youn Yeo Jung talked about her involvement in her new Hollywood movie 'The Wedding Banquet', stating that the role holds significant personal significance for her.
She mentioned that in South Korea, discussing one's sexual identity openly, especially with family, is uncommon due to the country's conservative nature. However, she bravely shared that her eldest son is gay, and certain dialogues in the film were inspired by their real conversations.
In another interview with a Hong Kong media outlet 'South China Morning Post', Youn Yeo Jung revealed that her son came out as gay in 2000. She recounted holding his wedding in New York when same-sex marriage became legal there, as it was still a secret in Korea at the time.
Youn Yeo Jung expressed her love and support for her son and his husband, wishing for Korea to become more accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, although she expressed uncertainty about whether this would occur.
'The Wedding Banquet' made its North American debut on April 18, adapting director Ang Lee's 1993 film. The movie revolves around two gay immigrants in the U.S. orchestrating a pretend wedding to meet family expectations.
Directed by Korean-American filmmaker Andrew Ahn, the film stars Youn Yeo Jung, Han Kee Chan, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, and Joan Chen. In the movie, Youn Yeo Jung plays the grandmother of the gay Korean-American protagonist.
Youn Yeo Jung was previously married to singer Cho Young Nam and has two sons from that marriage. She raised her sons single-handedly after their divorce in 1987.
