Based on Ampere's analysis of Netflix's viewing data, South Korean content has been consistently capturing 8-9% of global viewership on Netflix since 2023, surpassing content from the U.K. and Japan but ranking behind U.S. content.
Within the top 500 most popular non-U.S. titles, South Korean productions represent 17%, with 'Squid Game: Season 2' becoming the leading global hit by late 2024. Other Korean shows like 'Love Next Door' and 'Culinary Class Wars' have also garnered significant popularity, alongside established favorites such as 'Queen of Tears' and 'Crash Landing on You.'
Netflix's success can be attributed to its investment strategies, with more than half of the top 100 Korean titles being Originals and nearly a third being exclusive releases, many of which are sourced from CJ ENM, a prominent content provider. Netflix has allocated 2.5 billion USD for Korean content development until 2028.
South Korean media firms like CJ ENM are also strengthening their international presence, setting an 818 million USD content budget for 2025 and outlining plans for global partnerships and expanding their streaming services worldwide.
