General Motors Pauses Canada Assembly Plant Operations Due to Slow Demand
/Article

General Motors' Canadian branch has announced the suspension of production and staff reductions at its assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario due to lower demand for their electric delivery vehicles. This decision to pause production at the CAMI Assembly plant during the spring and summer is driven by market demand and excess inventory of the BrightDrop vehicle, not by U.S. tariffs on Canadian vehicle production. GM Canada spokesperson Jennifer Wright stated that adjustments are being made to manage inventory levels and production schedules in line with current demand, while also expressing the company's commitment to maintaining BrightDrop production at the CAMI plant and supporting employees during the transition. This move has been deemed devastating by the union Unifor, which has stated that the plant will be shut down until October, followed by operations on a single shift leading to an indefinite layoff of approximately 500 workers.
