China retaliated against the United States by increasing tariffs on American goods from 84% to 125% starting the following day. This move came in response to the escalating trade tensions between the two countries, as U.S. President Donald Trump temporarily exempted other nations from tariff increases.
The cumulative tariffs imposed by Trump on Chinese imports now stand at 145%, comprising a recent 125% hike and an existing 20% tariff related to fentanyl production in China. The Chinese Commerce Ministry criticized the U.S. for engaging in a tariff battle, calling it a mere numerical competition with no real economic impact and a potential historical farce in the global economy.
Despite the retaliatory measures, China warned that it would steadfastly fight back if the U.S. continued to threaten its interests. Additionally, China lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization over the U.S.'s tariff escalation.
