In a recent statement on a French radio show, European Central Bank policymaker Francois Villeroy de Galhau expressed concerns about the impact of US President Donald Trump's recent policy decisions on the confidence in the US dollar. Villeroy, who also heads the Bank of France, criticized the protectionist and unpredictable stance of the Trump administration, labeling them as negative factors for the US economy. Trump's recent announcement of reducing imposed duties while increasing pressure on China led to a surge in global stock markets. Villeroy highlighted the inconsistency in the Trump administration's approach towards maintaining the US dollar's central role, suggesting that recent events have undermined trust in the currency. He noted that this situation could potentially benefit the euro in its international standing. Villeroy praised the creation of the euro 25 years ago, asserting that it has granted Europe monetary independence to set interest rates independently of the United States. Additionally, Villeroy dismissed concerns about a recession in France, contrasting with French finance minister Eric Lombard's downward adjustment of France's 2025 economic growth forecast from 0.9% to 0.7%.
