Davidson Kempner, a U.S. investment fund, and Pioneer Point Partners from Britain have announced their collaboration to invest 8.5 billion euros ($9.35 billion) by 2030 in a data center hub in Sines, Portugal. This initiative, named Start Campus, aims to cater to the increasing demand from prominent technology and AI firms. Located in Sines, around 150 km (93 miles) south of Lisbon, the project has already completed one of the six planned buildings. The rise in investments in data centers, crucial for AI computing power, has been driven by the introduction of ChatGPT by OpenAI in 2022, prompting businesses from various sectors to adopt cloud technologies and incorporate AI into their operations. Portugal's acting Economy Minister, Pedro Reis, views this project as a significant investment that positions Portugal strategically in the data economy, leveraging Sines' advantageous geographical location.
