Groups representing American farmers and food processors expressed mostly negative views on President Donald Trump's recent announcement of imposing extensive tariffs on imports. These tariffs have raised concerns about potential retaliation and are expected to result in increased prices for consumers.
Various farm trade and lobby organizations criticized the tariffs. The American Farm Bureau Federation emphasized that the tariffs could harm U.S. farmers' competitiveness and lead to long-term market share erosion. The National Farmers Union also voiced opposition, warning that the plan puts farmers at risk amidst economic challenges.
Meanwhile, dairy processors and fresh produce growers and retailers highlighted that the tariffs could drive prices up for consumers and reduce market opportunities for farmers. While fruits and vegetables under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement were exempted from tariffs, concerns remain regarding tariffs on other trading partners.
On the other hand, beef and seafood groups expressed more positive reactions, viewing the tariffs as a chance for growth in markets where they have faced competitive disadvantages.
