Swiss business group criticizes Trump tariffs as unjust and damaging

Switzerland's main business lobby has strongly opposed the U.S. tariffs on Swiss imports, deeming them unjustified and damaging. The Swiss government emphasized the importance of upholding international law.

President Trump imposed a 31% tariff on Swiss imports, higher than those imposed on the European Union and Britain. Economiesuisse, a business group, argued that Switzerland had eliminated industrial tariffs and had lower import duties than the U.S., making the tariffs unreasonable.

The group expressed concern that the tariffs would negatively impact the Swiss export industry. Despite Switzerland's trade surplus with the U.S. in goods, trade between the two countries is fairly balanced when services are considered.

Pharmaceutical products, which constitute a significant portion of Swiss exports to the U.S., are unaffected by Trump's tariffs. Swiss President Keller-Sutter highlighted the importance of adhering to international law and maintaining free trade in response to the tariff announcement.

Switzerland values its economic relationship with the U.S., being its largest export market and a significant foreign investor. However, the country's heavily subsidized agricultural sector remains a point of contention within the OECD.
