China has called on the United States to retract its recent tariffs immediately and has promised to take measures to protect its interests. This comes after President Donald Trump imposed extensive tariffs on all U.S. trade partners. The Chinese commerce ministry criticized the U.S. action, emphasizing that it undermines the balance of interests established in global trade negotiations and ignores the benefits that the U.S. has gained from international trade. The Chinese government expressed strong opposition to the tariffs and stated its intent to retaliate to defend its rights. The escalating trade tensions between the two largest economies could disrupt global supply chains. Trump's decision to impose a 34% tariff on China, in addition to the previous 20% levy, could increase to 54%, moving towards the 60% threatened during his campaign. Chinese exports, like those from other countries, will be subjected to a 10% baseline tariff, with further reciprocal tariffs to follow. Moreover, Trump has also taken steps to close a trade loophole that allowed duty-free low-value packages from China and Hong Kong to enter the U.S.
