According to the American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan, the partnership between Taiwan and the United States is crucial for shared economic growth and plays a vital role in ensuring security and stability in the region's supply chain. The statement came after U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled tariffs that will affect various trading partners, including Taiwan, which will face a 32% tariff due to its significant trade surplus with the U.S. Nevertheless, semiconductors, a key Taiwanese export, are exempt from these tariffs.

The AmCham Taiwan emphasized Taiwan's essential contribution to the U.S. economy and called for policymakers in both countries to continue nurturing this mutually beneficial relationship. The chamber highlighted that amidst increasing geopolitical complexities, the partnership between the U.S. and Taiwan not only drives economic prosperity but also plays a critical role in ensuring supply chain security and regional stability.

At the moment, there has been no response from Taiwan's government regarding the tariffs as Thursday and Friday are public holidays in Taiwan. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te had previously stated that Taiwan is a vital player in the global supply chain and will safeguard its companies' interests. The government has acknowledged that trade with the U.S. has been heavily influenced by the demand for Taiwanese technology products, particularly advanced semiconductors, an industry where Taiwan holds a leading position with major chipmaker TSMC.

In a move to balance trade, Taiwan has planned to reduce some of its import tariffs and increase purchases of U.S. energy. TSMC recently declared a substantial $100 billion investment in the United States, further solidifying Taiwan's commitment to strengthening economic ties with its American counterpart.
