“WSJ Reports: Meta CEO Zuckerberg Urges Trump to Prevent Antitrust Trial”
/Article

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg is pushing for an agreement with U.S. President Donald Trump and White House officials to avoid an antitrust trial scheduled for later this month. The report mentions that Meta has engaged with the president and his top advisers before the April 14 Federal Trade Commission trial. The trial could potentially require Meta to sell off messaging platform WhatsApp and image-sharing app Instagram, which they acquired.

Meta stated to Reuters that they regularly engage with policymakers to discuss various issues affecting competitiveness, national security, and economic development. The White House and an FTC spokesperson declined to provide any comments on the matter. The FTC filed a lawsuit against Meta in 2020 during Trump's administration, accusing the company of unlawfully maintaining a monopoly in personal social networks.

The FTC alleges that Meta, previously known as Facebook, excessively paid for Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014 to remove emerging competition rather than competing in the mobile market on its own.
