During a press interview for the Netflix series 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' at the Ambassador Seoul Grand Ballroom in Jung-gu, IU openly discussed the political controversy that surrounded her on April 2nd KST.
When questioned about being misconstrued or facing rumors that were contrary to her intentions, IU replied with humility and gratitude, admitting that she had experienced such situations before. She expressed surprise at the longevity of the love she had received for her work and acknowledged that despite facing overwhelming feedback at times, the love she had received far outweighed any criticism.
In a gesture of support for her fans attending a protest rally in Yeouido calling for President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment in December of last year, IU prepaid 200 breads, 200 drinks, and 200 bowls of gukbap. While some praised this act, it also attracted criticism from Yoon's supporters who initiated a boycott on brands endorsed by IU and gave her the nickname 'LIU'.
Reflecting on the controversy, IU stated that although the negative reactions bothered her to some extent, she refrained from watching the videos or questioning why they were targeting her. She indicated that such attention, whether positive or negative, is a part of her job, prompting her to think about how she had become a figure who garnered so much attention.
IU shared that she typically approaches such situations by considering that attention as a sign of engagement from the public, rather than getting caught up in a 'why me?' mindset. She acknowledged that while she believes it is essential to take action if someone crosses a serious line or her agency deems a behavior unacceptable, she generally does not focus on the negative aspects.
With her composed and reflective responses, IU once again demonstrated her maturity, illustrating why she remains one of the most esteemed personalities in the Korean entertainment industry.
