Joelle Pineau, the head of Meta's artificial intelligence research department, has announced her plans to resign from her position amid the competitive landscape of AI technology development. Pineau, who has been with the company for eight years, will be leaving at the end of May. In a social media post, she highlighted the evolving world, the fast-paced AI competition, and Meta's upcoming endeavors as reasons for her departure to make room for others to continue the work. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is yet to comment on Pineau's departure or name a successor. Pineau, based in Montreal and also a computer science professor at McGill University, has been instrumental in Meta's open-source strategy for creating AI systems like the Llama model, where essential components are publicly available for modification and use by others. Her resignation comes just before Meta's launch of the LlamaCon AI conference on April 29. In 2023, Pineau took charge of Meta's AI research division, previously known as Facebook AI Research, which was founded a decade ago with input from renowned AI expert Yann LeCun. LeCun, who led the group until 2018, continues to serve as Meta's chief AI scientist.
