Residents of Chulsan-myeon in Yeongdeok, Gyeongsangbuk-do, were rescued by an Indonesian sailor, Sugianto, during a wildfire, prompting the Acting Minister of Justice to consider granting him long-term residency (F-2) status. According to the Ministry of Justice, Acting Minister Kim Seok-woo instructed officials to review Sugianto's eligibility for the F-2 visa, which can be granted to individuals recognized for special contributions to South Korea or the promotion of public welfare. Sugianto, who arrived in Korea on a work visa eight years ago and works as a sailor, was reported to have evacuated villagers with the village head to a seawall 300m away as a fire spread from Eiseong-gun to the coastal village of Chulsan-myeon on the night of the 25th of last month. Many villagers were reportedly saved thanks to their efforts to wake up sleeping residents by running from house to house. Sugianto is known to have a wife and children in his home country.
