US Cites India’s Challenging Import Regulations as Trade Obstacle Prior to Implementation of Trump’s Tariffs
/Article

Concerns have been raised by the United States regarding India's growing import-quality requirements, which are seen as barriers to trade. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative released a report pointing out India's customs barriers, import restrictions, and high tariffs. Amid President Donald Trump's attempts to reshape global trade to benefit the U.S., India is one of the few countries trying to reduce tariffs and appease Trump, who has criticized India as a "tariff king." Both nations are in discussions to strike an early trade deal, with India reportedly willing to reduce tariffs on a significant portion of U.S. imports. However, the U.S. expressed worries that India's import regulations are not aligned with international standards and are complex or lack clear timelines. India's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made various standards mandatory for quality control in sectors like chemicals, medical devices, and electronics, among others. India is hopeful for an exemption from Trump's reciprocal tariffs, though the U.S. has not provided any assurance on this matter during recent bilateral talks. The USTR's report also highlighted concerns about India's data privacy regulations, citing potential restrictions on cross-border data transfers and data localization under the country's Digital Personal Data Protection Act draft rules.
