French antitrust authority penalizes Apple for misuse of dominant role in mobile app distribution

Apple has been fined 150 million euros by France's antitrust regulator for misusing its dominant position in the distribution of mobile applications for iOS and iPad devices from April 2021 to July 2023. The French Competition Authority found that while Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework aimed at obtaining user consent for data collection by third-party apps was not inherently problematic, the way it was executed was deemed excessive and not essential for safeguarding personal data. This framework mandates that iPhone and iPad users consent to data collection by third-party apps through Apple-operated systems to enhance privacy, with a standardized window display format.
