Stellantis Plans to Purchase CO2 Credits from Tesla’s Pool Through 2025, According to Executive

In Turin, Italy, Stellantis is set to purchase credits from a group led by Tesla in 2025 to comply with the European Union's CO2 reduction regulations, as stated by the group's head in Europe on Saturday. Car manufacturers, facing stricter EU emissions standards, have agreed to pool their emissions to avoid fines by having those with lower electric vehicle (EV) sales buy carbon credits from leaders in the market like Tesla and Polestar. Stellantis, the second largest carmaker in Europe, has joined a pool led by Tesla alongside other competitors.

Despite the shift by the European Commission to allow compliance based on a carmaker's average emissions over the period from 2025 to 2027, Stellantis intends to make full use of the credits purchased from Tesla this year, according to Jean-Philippe Imparato, the group's European operations head. At an automotive event in Turin, Imparato disclosed that Stellantis' current EV sales in Europe stand at 14%, falling short of the EU's 21% target. While the extension to 2027 provides some relief, it is not a definitive solution, he cautioned.

Imparato also announced that production of the new hybrid version of the Fiat 500 city car will commence at Stellantis' Mirafiori complex in Turin in November, with a yearly production target of 130,000 units for both the hybrid and EV models.
