Impending Copper Import Tariffs Potentially Enforced by Trump in the Coming Weeks
/Article

US tariffs on imported copper may be imposed sooner than expected, according to insiders. President Trump ordered the Commerce Department in February to investigate potential copper tariffs and provide a report within 270 days, but sources suggest a quicker resolution. Some believe the investigation is merely a formality as Trump has expressed intentions to enforce the tariffs. Officials indicate that the review is progressing rapidly and could be concluded before the 270-day timeframe, although they prefer to remain anonymous. The White House chose not to comment on the matter. Trump has threatened to levy tariffs of up to 25% on all copper imports, potentially disrupting the global market for the widely-used metal. This swift action contrasts with the longer investigations that preceded steel and aluminum tariffs declared during Trump's initial term. The futures market currently shows a 5% premium for December copper delivery, signaling low anticipation of immediate tariff implementation by the US. The price of copper in New York has already risen beyond other international benchmarks following Trump's tariff hints. The substantial price gap between the two cities has led to a rush among traders to ship copper to the US, leaving China and other major consumers facing a shortage. During his speech to Congress on March 5, Trump erroneously mentioned imposing a 25% tariff on copper along with other materials, despite the copper investigation being initiated just weeks prior.
