A judge criticized Lil Rod's lawyer, Tyrone Blackburn, for submitting "shocking" legal documents related to Diddy, cautioning about possible sanctions. The judge overseeing the civil lawsuit between Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones and Sean "Diddy" Combs voiced a strong warning towards Blackburn for making contentious legal assertions, using improper language, and taunting opposing attorneys in official court submissions. U.S. District Judge J. Paul Oetken from the Southern District of New York expressed concern over Blackburn's filings being filled with inaccuracies, baseless accusations, and inappropriate attacks.
The judge found Blackburn's conduct concerning and cautioned that further similar behavior could lead to punitive measures or formal referral to the court's disciplinary committee. In response to one of Blackburn's filings claiming Diddy and the Combs RICO Enterprise were assumed guilty of being a RICO criminal organization, the judge dismissed it as absurd and shocking.
Blackburn was also chided for including personal attacks in his submissions. When confronted about his choice of words, Blackburn responded strangely, mentioning that the defense attorneys' focus on him was becoming disconcerting.
Earlier in the same case, Blackburn had filed claims against Universal Music Group, CEO Lucian Grainge, Motown Records, and other executives, accusing them of funding Diddy's alleged wrongdoings. These claims were withdrawn after UMG's lawyers threatened to seek sanctions.
Although penalties were not imposed at that time, the judge criticized Blackburn's behavior as incompetent and mentioned an ongoing referral to the Southern District's disciplinary committee due to repeated failure to investigate fundamental aspects of his cases. The judge clarified that Blackburn's misconduct would not be attributed to Lil Rod but highlighted the attorney's professional duties to accurately present the law, cooperate respectfully with fellow lawyers, and allow for efficient court procedures.
Lil Rod initiated the lawsuit against Diddy in February 2024, alleging the Hip-Hop mogul of sexual assault, drugging, trafficking, and racketeering.
