“Is South Korea Encouraging Revolutionary Change? Insights from NJZ (NewJeans) on Legal Disputes and Industry Obstacles”
/Article

In March 22, 2025, reflecting on the events of 2024, K-pop idol Hyein felt perplexed by the changes that had occurred. Within a short period, Hyein and her fellow NJZ members shifted from being a top-selling K-pop group to rebels embroiled in a legal dispute with their former record label.

Hyein, aged 16, expressed in an interview with TIME in early March how she experienced inconsistencies in people's treatment towards her, expecting her to switch between a child and an adult based on convenience.

In November 2024, Hyein, Minji, Danielle, Haerin, and Hanni decided unilaterally to end their contract with ADOR, a HYBE subsidiary, citing unfair treatment and workplace harassment, allegations that ADOR refuted. This split led to a substantial loss in market value for HYBE.

NJZ then announced their return with a new name and increased creative freedom, planning a performance at ComplexCon in Hong Kong on March 23. Despite ADOR's efforts to block them from releasing music or performing independently, NJZ remained resolute in challenging the decision.

The group expressed disappointment at the court's ruling in favor of ADOR but remained determined to continue their journey and advocate for change and growth in the industry. The members emphasized the need for reforms in the K-pop industry, shedding light on issues such as harsh working conditions and idols being commodified.

Hanni's testimony at the National Assembly revealed harassment at HYBE, with the group accusing the label of meddling in their activities and media presence. A forthcoming court hearing on the contract validity with ADOR is scheduled for April 3, potentially subjecting NJZ to significant penalties if they lose. Despite the uncertainties, the group maintains a positive outlook on their future endeavors.

Looking towards their comeback, the members are eager for a breakthrough that could potentially impact the K-pop scene while remaining proud of their resilience and determination, regardless of the outcome of their legal battles.
