Former Waymo CEO Explains Why He Believes Tesla Is Still No Match for Waymo’s Robotaxis
/Article

John Krafcik, former CEO of Waymo, stated to Business Insider that Waymo currently does not have any competitors in the robotaxi sector that can match the company's scale, safety, and performance. He specifically mentioned that Tesla's reliance solely on cameras for autonomous driving was not in line with Waymo's approach. Krafcik emphasized that Waymo still leads the way compared to other companies in the United States and China. Despite criticisms towards Tesla's robotaxi ambitions and preference for camera-only systems over lidar sensors, Krafcik highlighted the importance of a robust sensor set for ensuring safety in autonomous vehicles. While Tesla aims to deploy autonomous driving on a large scale without the added costs of lidar sensors, Krafcik argued that the benefits of using lidar in terms of safety outweigh the costs. Krafcik's perspective aligns with many in the autonomous vehicle industry who believe that lidar sensors are crucial for reliable autonomous driving. Despite advancements made by other companies like Baidu's Apollo Go and Zoox, Krafcik maintains that Waymo remains a leader in autonomous ride-hailing services.
