Korean Air is close to finalizing a deal worth $32.7 billion for new Boeing planes and GE Aerospace engines, according to South Korea's industry ministry. The airline had announced its intention to purchase 20 777-9 and 20 787-10 aircraft from Boeing with the option for an additional 10 planes. In addition to the plane deal valued at $24.9 billion, Korean Air is also considering the procurement of eight spare GE engines along with engine maintenance services, which would amount to $7.8 billion. South Korea's industry minister, Ahn Duk-geun, is in the United States to bolster bilateral relations amid concerns over potential tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump. The minister highlighted the significance of these agreements in promoting further collaboration between the two nations, with a focus on supporting private sector cooperation. The signing ceremony, attended by various officials from both countries and companies including Korean Air, Boeing, and GE Aerospace, aimed to strengthen aerospace partnerships. Korean Air had recently acquired two-thirds of Asiana Airlines, solidifying its position as one of Asia's largest carriers. Malaysia Aviation Group and Japan Airlines have also disclosed plans to purchase new Boeing aircraft in the coming years.
