A former staff member who worked with Eminem is facing federal charges for allegedly stealing and selling unreleased songs by the rapper. Joseph Strange, who used to be an audio engineer at Eminem's Effigy studio in Michigan from 2007 to 2021, is accused of taking over two dozen unreleased tracks from Eminem's private collection and selling them unlawfully. The stolen songs, covering a period from 1999 to 2018, were reportedly stored in password-protected hard drives kept in a secure studio safe. It is alleged that he sold the unreleased material for approximately $50,000 in Bitcoin, with some songs leaked online by a Canadian buyer using the name "Doja Rat." The theft was discovered when studio employees noticed Eminem's unreleased songs circulating online and informed the FBI. Authorities executed a search warrant at Strange's home, where they found numerous audio files, handwritten lyrics, and an unpublished Eminem music video. If convicted, Strange could face up to 15 years in prison - five years for copyright infringement and an additional 10 years for transporting stolen goods across state lines. Eminem's spokesperson expressed dismay over the betrayal, highlighting the damage caused to Eminem's creative legacy and collaborators, and emphasizing the commitment to protecting the rapper's work.
