In a move to revamp under its new owner Tata Group, Air India is considering placing a substantial order for a large number of widebody aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus. Industry insiders revealed that the discussions involve potentially acquiring 30 to 40 planes, namely Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X models, with a chance that the deal could involve more than 50 airplanes. The specific details of the order are yet to be finalized, with more clarity expected closer to the Paris Air Show in June.
The airline had previously made a significant purchase in 2023 of 470 planes from both manufacturers, along with an additional order of 100 Airbus jets last year, primarily for single-aisle aircraft. This potential new order of widebody jets aims to support Air India's efforts to regain lost market share and keep up with the rising international passenger traffic from India, which is projected to grow considerably this fiscal year.
While Air India's modernization plans are ambitious, they have been constrained by delays in aircraft deliveries, leading to the continued use of older aircraft. The airline's transformation journey, closely monitored by various stakeholders, has faced challenges due to global aircraft shortages, particularly in engines and premium cabin components, extending Tata's initial five-year plan for Air India. Amid these hurdles, Air India is striving to compete with international carriers renowned for their modern fleets and premium services like Emirates and Lufthansa in a bid to recapture the Indian travel market.
