SoftBank Group Corp. has agreed to purchase semiconductor designer Ampere Computing LLC, expanding its presence in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The acquisition, valued at $6.5 billion in an all-cash transaction, is set to be announced soon. The deal includes the sale of stakes held by Ampere's early backers, Oracle Corp. and Carlyle Group Inc., with the transaction expected to be completed in the latter part of 2025. As a result of this acquisition, Ampere will operate under SoftBank as a subsidiary, maintaining its name and headquarters in Santa Clara. Ampere focuses on producing processors for data center equipment, with its technology utilized by Arm Holdings Plc, a company predominantly owned by SoftBank. This acquisition by SoftBank provides them access to a leading design team for advanced data center chips, enabling them to capitalize on the growing demand for these products in the AI infrastructure market. Ampere is recognized for its energy-efficient chips which have been a key factor in its competitive advantage in the data center chip industry.
