Hino Motors, A Toyota Subsidiary, Hit with $1.6 Billion Penalty for Emissions Fraud Scheme, According to DOJ

The U.S. Justice Department announced on Wednesday that a division of Japanese automaker Toyota has been found guilty of participating in a fraudulent emissions scheme for several years, resulting in penalties totaling $1.6 billion. Hino Motors admitted guilt in the Eastern District of Michigan, and Judge Mark A. Goldsmith imposed a fine of $521.76 million. The company is also on probation for five years and banned from importing diesel engines it produces into the U.S. Additionally, the court issued a forfeiture money judgment of $1.087 billion against Hino Motors.
