A former executive's controversial tell-all book, "Careless People," has quickly gained popularity by selling 60,000 copies in its debut week and securing a spot in Amazon's top 10 best-seller list. The book, penned by Sarah Wynn-Williams and released by Flatiron Books, reveals unsettling behaviors of prominent figures at Meta including Mark Zuckerberg and Joel Kaplan, along with allegations of Zuckerberg seeking favor with Chinese officials. Meta has criticized Wynn-Williams for breaching a severance agreement and publishing a book riddled with inaccuracies.

Despite Meta's attempts to discredit the book, first-week sales encompassing print, audio, and digital copies propelled "Careless People" to the No. 3 spot on Amazon. An emergency arbitrator granted a hold on Wynn-Williams from making additional negative claims against Meta, acknowledging the company's likelihood of succeeding in the non-disparagement claim. However, Flatiron can continue to promote and release the book.

Meta hailed the arbitrator's ruling, denouncing the book as defamatory and filled with falsehoods regarding the company's executives. Flatiron condemned Meta's use of a non-disparagement clause to silence the author, emphasizing their commitment to publishing consequential works like "Careless People," which underwent thorough scrutiny before publication.

The book's announcement came shortly before its release, prompting Meta to question media outlets about their coverage plans. Critics like Ron Charles from The Washington Post have reported receiving persistent messages from Meta, a practice he finds unprecedented in his extensive experience in the industry.
