Zelenskiy Supports Energy Ceasefire in Positive Conversation with Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has agreed to a suggestion to cease attacks on energy assets as a starting point in President Donald Trump's initiative to resolve the conflict that originated from Russia's full-scale invasion three years ago.

In a statement following a conversation with Trump on Wednesday, Zelenskiy expressed that ending attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure could be an initial move towards ultimately putting an end to the war. Trump described the call as positive after having had contentious exchanges with Zelenskiy before. The top US officials also spoke favorably of the call. Trump assured renewed support to Ukraine by offering additional air defense systems, specifically Patriot missile systems, to safeguard civilians, with a commitment to collaborate with Zelenskiy in sourcing available resources, especially in Europe.

The US's pledge of support for Ukraine came after Trump had a friendly call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin indicated a willingness to pause attacks on energy facilities, but retained conditions requiring a halt to US weapons and intelligence aid to Ukraine, as well as maintaining control over seized land.

Trump even proposed overseeing Ukraine's electricity and nuclear power facilities, citing that American ownership would provide the best protection for the infrastructure. Zelenskiy confirmed that the details of the conversation between Trump and Putin were shared, and mentioned that Ukrainian and US representatives would convene in Saudi Arabia in the near future to continue coordinating efforts towards peace.

The relationship between Trump and Zelenskiy had encountered challenges during a publicized meeting in February, highlighting their differing priorities concerning the conflict and relations with Putin. Putin's offer to suspend attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure follows a period of severe strikes during the winter, which have somewhat subsided as the weather gets warmer. In response, Ukraine has targeted Russian oil refineries to disrupt fuel supplies and revenues.
