Amazon.com's self-driving unit, Zoox, has issued a recall for 258 vehicles because of problems in the automated driving system that could lead to sudden hard braking, the company disclosed on Wednesday. The affected vehicles are those installed with ADS software versions released prior to November 5, as reported by Zoox to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently.
Zoox, headquartered in California, has resolved the issue by updating the ADS software in the impacted vehicles. Although the exact number of vehicles in operation has not been made public, the company has increased testing activities in the past year. In June of the previous year, the company announced intentions to commence testing autonomous vehicles in two additional cities.
Concerns around self-driving vehicle safety have been heightened, especially after an incident in 2023 involving a Cruise vehicle causing serious injury to a pedestrian. Waymo, a self-driving vehicle company owned by Google, also recalled over 670 autonomous vehicles in the prior year when one of its driverless cars collided with a wooden utility pole in Phoenix, Arizona.
