Actor Lee Jun Ki is facing a tax reassessment amounting to ₩900 million (about $620,000 USD), which he is disputing through legal channels.
Recent reports disclosed that the Seoul Gangnam Tax Office conducted a tax audit on Lee Jun Ki and his agency, Namoo Actors, in 2023. Subsequently, the National Tax Service (NTS) concluded that Lee owed more taxes, resulting in a reassessment.
After an unsuccessful pre-assessment review, Lee Jun Ki has taken the matter to the Tax Tribunal to challenge the decision. The disagreement originates from transactions between Namoo Actors and JG Entertainment, a private agency founded by Lee Jun Ki.
In 2014, Lee Jun Ki established JG Entertainment and entered into an exclusive contract with Namoo Actors. Instead of directly compensating Lee, Namoo Actors transferred his fees to JG Entertainment, which then reported the income as corporate revenue and paid corporate taxes.
The NTS objected to this arrangement, arguing that the payments should have been treated as personal income rather than corporate revenue, potentially indicating tax evasion. They highlighted discrepancies in tax invoices and the lower corporate tax rate compared to personal income tax rates.
Consequently, the NTS invalidated the corporate tax payments made by JG Entertainment and reclassified the income as personal earnings, leading to a ₩900 million tax bill for Lee Jun Ki.
Lee Jun Ki and Namoo Actors have expressed dissatisfaction with the reassessment, claiming it deviates from customary tax practices. Despite complying and paying the full amount, they argue that they followed tax regulations based on professional advice and accurately reported their taxes.
Moreover, the ownership of JG Entertainment by Lee Jun Ki and his father is cited to support its legitimacy as a business entity. Currently, Lee Jun Ki is waiting for the Tax Tribunal's final decision as the legal proceedings continue.
