Putin Rejects Ukraine Ceasefire in Negotiations While Trump Hails it as a Victory
/Article

President Vladimir Putin did not agree to the 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine requested by Donald Trump for ending the conflict, although Trump found it satisfactory. The outcome of their recent phone call disappointed US officials who aimed for a complete halt in fighting to pave the way for a lasting peace. Putin only committed to reducing attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, while urging the US and other countries to cut off the supply of weapons and intelligence to Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine indicated willingness to accept the proposal if the US acts as an intermediary. Despite the limited progress, Trump portrayed the outcome as a triumph and a potential starting point for a more extensive agreement. Analysts speculate that even this slight advancement in Trump's ceasefire proposal could deflect criticism that he is betraying Ukraine. The call addressed a negotiation process for a larger ceasefire, but the conflict in Ukraine persisted as evident from continued Russian drone attacks in Kyiv. Trump appeared to be looking beyond Ukraine toward broader geopolitical and economic benefits in renewing ties with Russia.
