MBC Prepares to Investigate Allegations of Workplace Harassment After Weathercaster's Passing
MBC has announced its readiness to launch an investigation into allegations of workplace harassment faced by the late weathercaster, Oh Yoanna, who tragically passed away on September 15, 2024. The network made this statement on January 28, revealing that they are willing to proceed with the investigation if requested by Oh Yoanna's family.
In response to recent revelations of a suicide note reportedly left by Oh Yoanna, MBC clarified, "We do not currently have the suicide note in our possession." However, they expressed their willingness to conduct a fact-check based on the newly discovered note if the family desires it.
Reports surfaced claiming that Oh Yoanna had detailed instances of harassment in a 17-page suicide note found on her phone, pointing fingers at two colleagues or senior weathercasters. As the news spread, her friends came forward with additional details on the bullying she endured, sparking a wave of social media support.
It was disclosed that Oh Yoanna, who joined MBC in May 2021, faced harassment from March 2022 onwards. Despite her attempts to seek help by informing several MBC officials, the network failed to initiate a workplace harassment investigation following her tragic death.
MBC emphasized that Oh Yoanna, as a freelancer, did not report her grievances to the relevant departments or management supervisors. The network stated, "Had she officially reported her grievances as per company policy, the appropriate investigation would have naturally followed."
The late weathercaster's passing at the age of 28 last September left many questions unanswered, with the cause of death remaining undisclosed.
Criticism was directed at MBC by the Media Special Committee of the People Power Party (PPP), alleging that the network was deflecting responsibility by offering an investigation only upon the family's request.
