The Divine 9 Unite: Historic Summit Featuring Veteran Journalist Sparks Passion for Information Literacy

In a remarkable display of unity akin to the Avengers, the presidents of all nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations converged for the groundbreaking “D9 Situation Room: Council of Presidents Town Hall,” a virtual event that captivated over 24,000 registered viewers.

Renowned journalist Joy-Ann Reid, a respected member of the Divine 9 and former host of MSNBC’s The ReidOut, delivered a powerful keynote address emphasizing the critical role of information literacy in combating the onslaught of misinformation plaguing society today.

Addressing the attendees, Reid sounded a clarion call, stressing the imperative of seeking reliable sources of information in an era rife with disinformation. She urged the audience, particularly within Black communities, to trust established news outlets like The New York Times, Reuters, BBC, and The Associated Press over the noise of social media platforms.

Drawing attention to the potential dangers of unchecked information dissemination, Reid shared a cautionary tale of federal workers misled by an unauthorized email, underscoring the necessity of verification before reaction.

The town hall, described as a pivotal starting point, centered on empowering Black communities, pinpointing trustworthy information outlets, and fostering grassroots involvement.

Highlighting the collective strength of the Divine 9, leaders stressed the significance of collaboration across organizations to amplify their impact. With practical strategies and community support at the forefront, plans for joint initiatives and resource pooling were unveiled to bolster Black-owned enterprises.

With over 10,000 active participants engaging in lively discussions, the town hall showcased a resounding commitment from Divine 9 members to champion shared causes and effect positive change.

Embracing a spirit of unity and purpose, the presidents reiterated their enduring dedication to community service, affirming, “We are not new to this, but we are steadfastly committed.”

This momentous summit signifies a potential turning point for the Divine 9 organizations, heralding a new era of collective action and collaboration that could reshape the landscape for these influential Black Greek-letter groups.
