Tyla’s unwavering determination to conquer the music industry blossomed into global stardom from a mere teenage aspiration.
The South African songstress, now a prominent figure in the world of music, shared her journey of overcoming obstacles and staying resolute in a candid interview with British Vogue, illustrating how her self-assurance paved the way for triumph.
Her breakthrough arrived in 2019 with the release of “Getting Late,” a track that struck a chord not only in South Africa but across the entire continent.
"Watching that video soar..." she mused, motioning upwards. "Especially within South Africa and Africa. It was then I proved to my parents my commitment and the possibility of success."
Though her self-belief remained unshaken, her parents harbored reservations initially. Aged 23 now, Tyla confessed that they were wary of the industry's uncertainties.
“They were concerned about the potential setbacks,” she disclosed. “Yet, my determination knew no bounds. I was resolute in making my dreams a reality.”
She stayed true to her word. By 2021, she had inked a deal with Epic Records, and by 2024, she had established her position in the global music scene with “Water,” the smash hit from her eponymous debut album.
However, her journey commenced long before inking that coveted record contract.
Recalling the pivotal encounter with her manager, Colin Gayle—a seasoned music industry aficionado renowned for his collaborations with Ne-Yo and 50 Cent—Tyla emphasized his influence in her ascension.
“He invited me to the studio for a recording session,” she recollected. “I met him with my parents by my side, and that very day, I laid down my first track.”
It was a relentless grind from thereon. “I was juggling school and studio sessions, school, studio, school, studio…” she reminisced with a chuckle.
Despite the hardships during her final year of school, her childhood dream remained steadfastly within reach.
