Huang Zitao, also known as Tao and aged 31, a singer and actor from China who was previously part of the group EXO, has generated attention in China by advertising job opportunities for his newly established women's hygiene product company. The positions offer salaries that are up to five times higher than the national average wage.
In recent reports until April 30th, Tao's sanitary pad brand 'DUOWEI' advertised open job positions. The requirements emphasized were being female-friendly, having a university degree or higher education, and no specific major being necessary. DUOWEI is currently looking to hire staff for various roles like e-commerce channel manager, livestream host, product manager, content editor, designer, and head of distribution and sales.
Particularly, the salary for the head of distribution and sales position stood at 30,000 yuan (around 4,000 USD). Considering that the average monthly income in China in 2023 was 6,050 yuan (about 800 USD), this salary is nearly five times the national average.
Tao launched the brand in response to his anger over a controversial report on CCTV that highlighted the reuse of sanitary pads in China. He pledged transparency by live-streaming the production process around the clock and distributed 50,000 sample products for free during the brand's launch.
Nevertheless, some individuals have criticized Tao for potentially seizing a social issue as a marketing strategy. It was pointed out that DUOWEI was not new but was an existing brand that sold sanitary pads online. People online noted that some of DUOWEI's past products, like pads and diapers, had been criticized for their poor quality, sparking suspicions that Tao might have acquired a problematic factory and is now rebranding it through intense public relations efforts. Some also highlighted that the transition, ranging from procurement to product development and testing, was completed in less than a month, leading to further skepticism.
Tao made his debut in 2012 as part of EXO but departed from the group in 2015 after taking legal action against his agency to terminate his exclusive contract. Subsequently, he has been actively involved in the Chinese entertainment sector.
