Director Yoon Sung Hyun Stands Up for BLACKPINK's Jisoo Amid Acting Criticism
During the press screening of ‘Newtopia’ on February 3rd KST at Megabox COEX in Seoul, Director Yoon Sung Hyun addressed the ongoing discussions about BLACKPINK's Jisoo and her acting abilities.
Yoon expressed his deep admiration for Jisoo’s performance, mentioning, “I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with her. While her talents may not fully shine in the initial episodes, by episode 8, you will see that ‘Yeongju could only be portrayed by Jisoo.’” He further added, “The character possesses a subtle sense of humor, and Jisoo herself exudes great wit. That's why I was eager to collaborate with her. It was a huge relief for me. She supported me in various aspects, both personally and professionally as an actress.”
Addressing the concerns regarding Jisoo's acting skills, Yoon clarified, “Working with Jisoo was effortless. Initially, I had doubts since she had not acted since 'Snowdrop' (2021-2022), and I wondered if she would be ready. However, despite taking a break unlike other actors, she devoted four days a week to script readings and put in immense effort. By the time filming began, she was exceptionally prepared.”
Yoon also commended Jisoo's dedication, stating, “She approached challenging action sequences with a positive attitude, despite the physical demands on a female lead. I am truly thankful for her commitment.”
‘Newtopia’ narrates the story of soldier Lee Jae Yoon (Park Jung Min) and his girlfriend Kang Yeong Ju (Jisoo), who strive to reunite in a zombie-infested Seoul. Adapted from the novel ‘Influenza’, the series marks Yoon’s debut OTT project. The script was co-authored by Han Jin Won (‘Parasite’) and Ji Ho Jin (‘A Shop for Killers’).
The eight-episode series is set to premiere on February 7th KST.
