Police in Seoul are looking into workplace harassment claims linked to the late MBC weathercaster Oh Yoanna, who tragically passed away in September. The investigation was launched after a petition was submitted to the National Petition Office, prompting authorities to take action.
The petitioner accused MBC, the department head, and two fellow weathercasters of violating labor laws, negligence resulting in death, and other offenses. They stressed that MBC is legally obligated to thoroughly investigate workplace harassment complaints and ensure the safety of the victim under the Labor Standards Act.
Furthermore, the petitioner called for an inquiry into MBC CEO Ahn Hyung Joon for potential violations of the Serious Accident Punishment Act. Allegations emerged when a letter from Oh Yoanna detailing workplace harassment came to light, followed by her family's revelation of a recorded conversation where Oh raised concerns to company officials.
In response to mounting pressure, MBC set up a fact-finding committee to probe the circumstances surrounding Oh's death. The committee comprises external experts and internal department heads to ensure a fair and objective investigation process.
