Base Outperforms Arbitrum, Evades Vitalik Buterin’s Ranking of Layer-2 Networks Destined for Failure

Coinbase's Layer-2 blockchain, Base, has advanced from Stage 0 to Stage 1 rollup, surpassing Arbitrum as the largest scaling solution on Ethereum. The stages denote the maturity of L2 rollups, following milestones proposed by Ethereum's co-founder, Vitalik Buterin. According to L2Beat data, Base has overtaken Arbitrum One as the largest optimistic rollup on Ethereum, with a Total Value Locked (TVL) surge of $557 million. Base now holds more than $710 million in Total Value Secured (TVS). Creator Jesse Pollak expressed pride in Base reaching Stage 1 and becoming the top solution by TVS. Base's move to Stage 1 with smart contract governance signifies progress towards a more decentralized system. Vitalik Buterin acknowledged Base's achievement, highlighting his criteria for recognizing mature L2 networks. This shift also aligns with Buterin's plan to enhance cryptographic trust and scale Ethereum's protocols. Despite Base's recent success, it has been a contender to Arbitrum, with its TVL surpassing $2 billion in September. Aerodrome remains the primary protocol on Base L2, followed by Morpho, Aave, and Uniswap. Arbitrum struggles to recover from an 80% crash, despite minor price improvement for ARB tokens in the last 24 hours.
