IU and Byun Woo Seok's upcoming MBC drama "21st Century Princess Consort" (working title) was initially slated to air in the latter half of 2025 but has now been rescheduled to the first half of 2026 as part of MBC's Friday-Saturday lineup.

In addition to IU and Byun Woo Seok, Noh Sang Hyun from "Pachinko" and Gong Seung Yeon from "The Killing Vote" have been cast as leading actors in the drama. This marks the first collaboration of these four actors in an MBC production, generating anticipation for their on-screen chemistry.

Set in a contemporary constitutional monarchy in Korea, "21st Century Princess Consort" is a romantic story that challenges social status barriers. The plot revolves around Seong Hee Joo, a successful but commoner woman who desires noble status, and Grand Prince Lee Wan, who lacks the freedom to truly live despite his royal privileges.

The script, winner of the 2022 MBC drama script contest, has received acclaim for its innovative and well-developed characters, as well as a compelling romance-focused storyline.

IU portrays Seong Hee Joo, a smart and ambitious woman from a wealthy family who enters a contract marriage with Grand Prince Lee Wan (played by Byun Woo Seok) to attain noble status. Byun Woo Seok's character, Grand Prince Lee Wan, is beloved by the people but finds himself restrained by royal responsibilities until he meets Seong Hee Joo, sparking a transformative journey for both.

Noh Sang Hyun plays Min Jung Woo, a skilled prime minister with ties to both leads, while Gong Seung Yeon embodies Yoon Yi Rang, a woman born into a family of queens who is determined to protect her role as a future queen at any cost.

MBC's executive producer Kang Dae Sun expressed excitement about the drama's unique concept, compelling characters, and strong storyline after years of development. "21st Century Princess Consort" is anticipated to start filming soon and premiere in the first half of 2026 on MBC.
