Scania, Volkswagen's truckmaker, has announced its agreement to acquire the division of bankrupt Northvolt that manufactures battery packs for heavy industry, a deal initially proposed in February. The purchase price remains undisclosed. Northvolt, based in Sweden, filed for bankruptcy recently, halting the earlier $6 million purchase offer from Scania. The transaction, involving around 260 employees producing battery systems for construction and mining equipment in Poland, signifies the first asset sale by Northvolt following the bankruptcy. The company had been attempting to sell non-core businesses to support its primary operations focused on electric vehicle battery production. Scania views this acquisition as enhancing its offerings in electrification for off-road applications, aligning with its strategy to strengthen long-term competitiveness.
