Official: Brazil to focus on negotiations following US trade tariffs
/Article

Brazilian officials are focusing on trade negotiations with the United States to address the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. They aim to expand commercial agreements with other countries to counter the impact of these tariffs. One of the main goals is to negotiate with U.S. authorities to resolve the situation.

Brazilian exports to the U.S. have been subjected to tariffs, including a 10% tariff on imports since last week and a 25% tariff on steel since March. The U.S. is Brazil’s second-largest trading partner after China, with a trade surplus of $28.6 billion in goods and services in 2024.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has mentioned the possibility of retaliation against the U.S. tariffs but remains committed to dialogue. Brazilian officials have engaged in talks with the Trump administration for over five weeks to address the steel tariffs. The integrated nature of trade between the two countries has been highlighted during these discussions.

Despite some relief at the announcement of the 10% tariff, Brazilian officials remain concerned about the uncertain impact of the additional taxes. Key Brazilian exports to the U.S. such as crude oil, aircraft, coffee, cellulose, beef, and orange juice are expected to be significantly affected by these tariffs.

Brazilian authorities are also considering the potential opportunities that may arise from the trade war, such as increased soybean exports to China. They are closely monitoring changes in trade flows, particularly with Asian markets previously supplying goods to the U.S.
