EU Commission to hold discussions on trade and US tariff strategy with industries
/Article

The European Commission has scheduled an in-person meeting with sectors affected by U.S. tariffs in an effort to explore new trade partnerships and potential countermeasures. The meeting, to be chaired by Commission industry chief Stephane Sejourne, will involve representatives from the steel and automotive industries. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has already engaged in discussions with executives from the metals, pharmaceutical, and automotive sectors to address the impact of the tariffs on EU companies in the short and medium term. The meeting aims to assess the effects of the tariffs and determine appropriate sector-specific policies, counter-tariffs, and non-tariff measures. Concerns have been raised regarding possible additional tariffs on various products like pharmaceuticals, copper, semiconductors, lumber, energy products, and minerals, as well as the potential impact on supply chains. The Commission is also considering input from industries on alternatives to U.S. trade, such as free trade agreements or partnerships. The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss the impact of tariffs on different industrial sectors and explore potential EU measures to minimize their consequences.
