According to a statement by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), a significant data breach involving its email system was reported to Congress. Unauthorized access to emails belonging to executives and employees was identified on February 11, compromising highly sensitive information related to the financial status of federally regulated financial institutions.

The initial disclosure of the security breach, which involved an administrative account within the agency's email system, was made in February. At that time, there was no evidence of any impact on the financial industry. The OCC oversees national banks, federal savings associations, as well as the federal branches and agencies of foreign banks.

In response to the breach, the OCC announced plans to conduct a thorough review of its current IT security protocols to enhance its ability to prevent, detect, and address potential future security breaches.
