Time is running out for Meta’s Zuckerberg to persuade Trump to stop antitrust trial

Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is making efforts to persuade President Trump to postpone a significant antitrust trial that seeks to break up his $1.3 trillion company. The trial, scheduled to commence on Monday, involves Meta facing off against Trump's Federal Trade Commission over allegations that Meta violated antitrust laws by acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp instead of competing with them. Government prosecutors are pushing for Meta to spin off Instagram and WhatsApp due to their substantial revenue contributions. Zuckerberg has been meeting with President Trump and administration officials to avoid the detrimental impact a breakup would have on the company. Although there are reports that settlement discussions are ongoing, the outcome remains uncertain as Trump's FTC chairman, Andrew Ferguson, will follow the president's directives. Legal experts suggest that the FTC is unlikely to drop the case, anticipating a tough legal battle with extensive preparation to bring the matter to trial. It is evident that Zuckerberg is keen on settling the case to circumvent a trial, given the consequences Meta could face for allegedly undermining competition.
